Daily hip pain is a fairly common condition, especially among older adults. During the period of one study, around 14% of older adult participants reported experiencing notable levels of hip pain. Recurring and extreme hip pain can be extremely disruptive to daily life. It can make daily movements like walking and sitting more tiresome and can even seriously affect mood. Physical therapy is often helpful for those with regularly occurring hip pain, and even more so when paired with exercises done at home.
3 physical therapy exercises that can also be used at home to help ease hip pain
- The band walk ” This exercise can be completed with a band around both ankles or above both of your kneecaps. To do the band walk, you must squat a little so that your knees are so slightly bent but your back remains straight. Next, take steps sideways for a few reps at a time, and once finished, repeat steps in the opposite direction.
- The butterfly ” To do the butterfly, sit on the floor with your legs bent in front of you so that your knees are almost touching the ground and the bottoms of your feet are touching each other. Put your hands on each of your knees or on your ankles, and move your legs so that they flutter up and down. If you would like, you can press down on your knees for added pressure.
- The horse kick ” To complete this exercise, you should first get onto your hands and knees on a flat surface. With one knee still on the ground, lift your opposite knee up and extend your leg behind you so that it is straight out in the air. Alternating with your opposite leg, repeat several times on each side.
If you're in need of physical therapy exercises for hip pain, we hope that the ones provided above provide some relief. These exercises are great for supplementing those performed during a PT session with a care provider.
