Myofascial release is a type of physical therapy that can be used as an alternative to opioids or other medicines for pain relief. It was first developed by physical therapist John F. Barnes. This type of therapy is most often used to treat myofascial pain syndrome, a condition that causes chronic pain. It is also particularly effective for those with carpal tunnel syndrome. Both myofascial pain syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome are similar in that they exhibit similar symptoms, are often confused and can be treated with myofascial release.
This technique has been utilized by physical therapists for at least 30 years. During myofascial release therapy, deep tissue called fascia is manually manipulated so that it can be broken up and produce easier movement in the area.
3 ways myofascial release can help your carpal tunnel syndrome
- Alleviates pain ” When fascia hardens, it tightens the tissue in the hand for those experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome. This can cause inflammation and ultimately, painful sensations. Myofascial release breaks up some of this hardened tissue so that the tightness and inflammation are minimized, and pain can be alleviated.
- Minimizes tightness ” One common effect of carpal tunnel syndrome is tightness, which can limit the range of motion in the hand. When myofascial release techniques are implemented on the hand, the tightness is reduced, allowing for improved movement in the hand.
- Relieves pressure” In addition to experiencing tightness and pain, another common effect of carpal tunnel syndrome is pressure on the nerves. Some people with carpal tunnel syndrome might also experience pressure on blood vessels. Once a physical therapist uses myofascial release to treat carpal tunnel, pressure placed on nerves, blood vessels and tissue is often significantly lessened.
