Pelvic Pain and Leaking Urine
3 minutes, 31 seconds

Are you someone who has chronic issues with pelvic pain and you often find yourself leaking urine? These kinds of issues can make it hard to live comfortably, which is why it’s so important to try to address them. Pelvic pain and urine leaks are usually the result of something called pelvic floor dysfunction. This condition involves changes within the pelvic muscles that make it difficult to perform a variety of activities without discomfort or even pain. It can make being in public spaces stress-inducing for fear of leaking urine or not making it to the bathroom in time, and can make even relaxed activities, like walking, painful.

If you think your pelvic pain and leaking urine might be caused by pelvic floor dysfunction, keep reading for more information on the condition and treatments listed below.

What are some of the possible causes of pelvic pain and leaking urine?

  • Having poor core strength.
  • Having poor posture.
  • Going through a surgery.
  • Falling or fracturing a pelvic bone.
  • Giving birth to a child.
  • Being overweight.
  • Sustaining damage to a nerve.

What are the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction?

  • Urinary incontinence — Pelvic floor dysfunction can cause urinary incontinence, meaning it can be hard to maintain control over your bladder.
  • Trouble with bowel movements — Pelvic floor dysfunction may make it difficult to have bowel movements because of the lack of control over the muscles. When you use the restroom, you need to be able to contract and relax your pelvic muscles. Weak muscle control can make this a lot more difficult.
  • Lower back pain — Lower back pain is another commonly reported symptom of pelvic floor dysfunction, because the muscles lack enough strength to support the core and back, which are connected.
  • Pain in the genitals — Some people with pelvic floor dysfunction may experience pain in their genitals.
  • Pain during intercourse — Another possible symptom for women with pelvic floor dysfunction is pain during intercourse.
  • Feelings of pressure on the pelvis — Some people may experience pressure on their pelvis and even their bladder.

What are some of the treatment options available for people who have pelvic pain and urine leakage?

  • Physical therapy — Physical therapy can help people struggling with pelvic pain and leaking urine specifically because it can gradually correct pelvic floor dysfunction. You can expect physical therapists to design a treatment program for you to build strength in your lower abdomen and pelvis for increased bladder control and reduced pain.
  • Mindfulness — Some people with pelvic pain and urine leakage benefit from practicing mindfulness. This might look like being aware of when and how much you eat and drink so you can time your bathroom trips accordingly. You can also practice mindfulness by scheduling regular bathroom breaks where you empty your bladder even if it isn’t full so that you’re not taken by surprise out in public.
  • Medication — Medication may work for some people with pelvic floor dysfunction. There are a few different types of medications that function to relax the bladder and allow for someone to control the urge to urinate as frequently. Medication can also be used to alleviate bothersome pelvic pain.
  • Devices — Another treatment option for someone dealing with pelvic floor dysfunction is to try out an assistive device. Some examples of assistive devices include inserts that can prevent unwanted leaking either before physical activity or for the full duration of a day.
  • Surgery — In the cases where the more conservative treatments aren’t as successful, surgery may be beneficial. However, not every surgical procedure renders the desired results. Surgery can take a while to recover from and might even result in complications. If you’re thinking of getting surgery for your pelvic pain and urine leakage, you should discuss with a trusted physician whether this option is right for you.
