Our ADA compliance checklist for physical therapy clinics

Table of Contents

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a law that was passed in 1990. It accommodates people who have disabilities and prohibits discrimination against them. This law was put into place to protect people who have disabilities from being discriminated against in several different sectors. These include employment, state and local services, public transit, telecommunications, and businesses that are open to the public.

Since physical therapy clinics fall under the category of โ€œbusinesses that are open to the public,โ€ itโ€™s imperative that each clinic is compliant with ADA standards. Take a look at some of the standards listed below.

A checklist: What physical therapy clinics need to remain ADA compliant

  • Ramps โ€” The ramps outside of a building are required for every business location; further, each ramp must meet specific height and handrail specifications.
  • Parking lots and entryways โ€” The parking lots must have a van-accessible spot that is clearly marked with a sign. The parking spot must be close to an accessible entryway.
  • Flooring โ€” All flooring should be slip resistant and carpeting must not be loose. Carpeting must also be no more than ยฝ inch thick.
  • Elevators โ€” Elevators must have a wide door opening with doors that reopen when a person or item is in between them. The buttons in the elevator must be a certain height from the floor and must have Braille on them.ย

These are just a few of the takeaways from the ADAโ€™s compliance list. You can view the complete ADA compliance checklist and detailed specifications on the ADAโ€™s website.
