- Allow for at least 10 days of sick leave per year — A good rule of thumb is to allow for at least 10 days of sick leave per year into your policy. Five of these sick leave days should be paid. It’s also a good idea to give enough room for your employees to use their sick leave days to care for ill children (if they have any), to avoid it cutting into their vacation time.
- Keep your employees’ privacy in mind — While you may request a doctor’s note for sick leave (although it’s generally recommended that you opt out of requesting doctor’s notes if your employee is taking less than 3 days off), you cannot request specific medical records or information. To request specific information on a doctor’s note is to be in violation of HIPAA.
- Make sure you are in compliance with the FMLA and ADA — You should read up on the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Americans With Disabilities Act to ensure that you’re in compliance while putting together vacation and sick leave policies for your physical therapy practice.
