Feeling hip pain when lying down? You could be dealing with one of these 5 common causes

2 minutes, 14 seconds

Many people often think of hip pain as a condition only elderly adults suffer from. However, hip pain is more common than you may think. According to one study on hip pain, as many as 40% of adults who play sports suffer from some form of chronic hip pain. Even otherwise young and healthy adults can be prone to hip pain. If you are experiencing hip pain when lying down in bed, there are a number of common causes that could be to blame.

What are some of the causes of hip pain when lying down?

Your hip pain could be the result of an injury to the muscle or joints of the hip. These kinds of injuries are common among athletes and those who work physically demanding jobs.

Hip injuries can sometimes be difficult to detect, because many people may assume that their hip pain is due to poor posture. If you are experiencing hip pain when lying down that does not go away after a few days, however, you may be suffering from one of these five common conditions:

  1. Tendinitis of the hip ” Tendinitis occurs when one of the tendons of the hip becomes inflamed, irritated or damaged. This condition results in microscopic tears in the tendon that can grow worse if left untreated.
  1. Pelvic floor dysfunction ” The muscles of the pelvic floor help to support our internal organs. These muscles can become strained after a traumatic injury, resulting in hip pain as well as incontinence.
  1. Hip impingement ” An impingement is an injury that occurs when muscle fibers become caught up on a bone, joint or another muscle in the body. This results in pain and stiffness and can be caused by repetitive stress and poor posture.
  1. Osteoarthritis ” As we grow older, the cartilage in our joints begins to break down. This can lead to our bones rubbing against one another, resulting in pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis is a common condition in adults over the age of 65.
  1. Rheumatoid arthritis ” Unlike osteoarthritis, which is caused by the natural aging process, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack otherwise healthy joints. This results in pain as well as inflammation and swelling.
