Important Considerations

Tennessee – Provisional Direct Access PT

You can see a physical therapist in Tennessee without a referral for up to 30 days. By law, we’ll notify your primary care provider at the start of care and consult with them after 90 days. If you’re not making progress, or if your condition is outside the scope of physical therapy, we’ll refer you to the right provider. Patients with certain chronic, neuromuscular, or developmental conditions may be exempt from these limits.

South Carolina – Provisional Direct Access PT

In South Carolina, you can begin treatment with a physical therapist without a referral for 30 days after your first appointment. If your care needs to continue beyond that period, a referral will be required.

Georgia – Provisional Direct Access PT

In Georgia, you can see a physical therapist without a referral for up to 8 visits or 21 days. After that, a referral is required unless:

  • You have a recent diagnosis of a neuromuscular condition (within 9 months)

  • You have a chronic musculoskeletal condition diagnosed in the past 90 days

  • You’re seeking fitness, wellness, or health promotion services

Our team will also explain the difference between a physical therapy diagnosis and a medical diagnosis, and note that insurance coverage may vary.
