Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is one of many joint disorders that can result in hypermobility, which may not cause pain or acute symptoms but does put you at much higher risk for joint pain, dislocation, and other conditions if left untreated. Ehlers-Danlos is also correlated with symptoms of fatigue, sleep disorders, and changes in mood.
Diagnosing hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) is a detailed process that involves identifying primary and corroborating symptoms. To be diagnosed with hEDS, a person typically presents with one of the following symptoms:
In addition to having hypermobile joints now or in the past, patients with hEDS will also have one of the following corroborating symptoms:
Other symptoms can indicate hEDS during a formal Ehlers-Danlos diagnostic evaluation at one of our clinics.
Although you may not currently be in pain, having hypermobile joints is a risk factor for injury, dislocated joints, and other health conditions that may otherwise go unaccounted for in future healthcare needs. Besides receiving a diagnosis that will help you receive better care in the future, our physical therapists can help treat hypermobility pain and discomfort by:
These and other techniques we might utilize seek to build muscle tissue in loose or hypermobile joints to strengthen and support them and prevent dislocation. We also provide posture and balance training to guide the body into safe, stable postures for the same reason.
Not everyone with hypermobile joints will be diagnosed with hEDS because there are many similar conditions that can also be treated proactively with physical therapy. At Peak Performance, we’re hoping to raise awareness of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome for the way in which it can seemingly sneak up on patients, causing chronic or worsened symptoms of other conditions.
If the symptoms listed here sound familiar to you or a loved one, it doesn’t hurt to get a formal diagnosis before your health begins to suffer.
Our Peak Performance offices each specialize in certain treatments, and our Garner location is one of only a few physical therapy offices with hypermobility experts who can diagnose and treat EDS.
